Surgery for 9/3 — Keeping us on our toes

Yesterday we met with the CHLA surgical team expecting to schedule Walter’s full repair for sometime mid-October.  Instead, with Wally’s decreasing Oxygen saturations (falling into the 80’s), and his plateauing growth, we have been given a surgery date for next week – Septbember 3rd.

Though we were anticipating more time to prepare this time around, we’re grateful that this earlier surgery will avoid an emergency down the road, and are SO ready to get this little heart mended.

Anyone who finds themselves in the Southern California area and may be interested/willing to donate blood for Walter, we are looking for O+ and O- donors.  We are anticipating Walter will need a minimum of two transfusions, though with his last surgery, Walter required four.  All donations must be made by Monday, August 31st.  If you are interested, please contact me directly.  Everyone else – we always appreciate extra prayers!

Pictured is the Right Ventricle to Pulmonary Artery (RV-PA) Conduit. Within the conduit will be an artificial or homograft valve depending on fit and availability. His Atrial Septal Defect (ASD) and Ventricular Septal Defect (VSD) holes will also be closed and a portion of his hypertrophied (thickened) ventricle will be shaved. The size of the conduit will likely be a 12mm, a size expected to last 2 -3 years. All of this will make Walter’s heart MUCH more efficient!

The above video discusses a repair very similar to Walter’s, and features his surgeon, Dr. Vaughn Starnes.  (Wally will not be having a heart cath since the surgical team has images from his previous surgery).

  1. I have scheduled my blood donation appointment at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles for Saturday morning 8/29.
So pleased that there is something I can do for Walter David. Wish I could give him all the blood he needs like I can give him love.

  2. We’ll be praying for all y’all from this side of the great USA.

We’re so glad that Walter has access to the “Best of the Best” medical care at CHLA. Those folks are awesome!

    Blessings!
